Moments of life transition present great potential and great peril for our relational lives. Historically, these periods of transition have been shared communally, not experienced alone. These days, groups across the U.S. are stepping up to re-embed support for transitions in local communities.
But, what does it actually look like for communities to support their members during life’s biggest transitions? How does the context of specific places shape these practices? And what are the possibilities and limits of this type of support?
During this virtual event, we will hear from three groups that support neighbors and community members through major life transitions: into adulthood, parenthood, and retirement. The event will include three rapid presentations from:
Jordan Bowman, the Executive Director of Journeymen, which supports boys in the transition from adolescence to adulthood with mentorship and rites of passage in Wake County, NC.
Melanie Roper and Swarnima Aswinkumar of PEPS, which connects new parents with peer learning and community support in the Seattle, WA region.
Frank Williams Jr. and Jim Isenberg, co-founders of Grandpas United, which connects grandpas with one another while mentoring future generations of youth and new fathers in Westchester County, NY.
Following the presentations, we’ll have facilitated breakout rooms where you’ll have the opportunity to dive deeper around the transition of your choosing — the transition into adulthood, the transition into parenthood, or the transition into retirement. If you’re interested in learning how local groups are making transitions more connected, supported, and embedded, this event may be for you.
